589 week seven - october 6, 2005

Cuban's Argument of Situationally Constrained Choice

Below are three chapters/topics for the discussion that we will have in the wiki space. Whoever is to lead each discussion area should formulate and then post by midday on Thursday, October 6 the question or discussion point for that chapter. Then, between midday on Thursday and Sunday evening everyone should write at least a couple of times (respond to each question and then to another person and then to their response to you) on each of the 3 questions areas (you'll have to check in several times as the discussion unfolds). The leaders for each discussion area should respond and comment and ask follow up questions and generally keep the discussion "flowing".

Discussion Points for Cuban's Teachers and Machines:

  • In Ch. 3 Cuban presents 4 explanations of the under utilization of technology in schools. He synthesizes 2 into an explanation he refers to as situationally constrained choice. Susan Midland will lead the discussion on this chapter.
  • In Ch. 4 Cuban predicts the fate of computers in classrooms. Chris Rehm will lead the discussion on this chapter.
  • In the Epilogue Cuban makes several suggestions for how reformers should proceed. Michael Salmonowicz will lead the discussion on this chapter.

NETS-T Here is the link to the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers. I forgot to include these as a link in last week's readings. You should look them over.

For Next Time:

  • Data Tools #2- Tools for collecting data about implementation readiness. Present this in class Oct 13; 10 min or so per person. Email me to let me know which one you pick.
  • ETIPS case #2 - the assignment code is Monet (you will be able to register for it after Oct 7). Before you come to class, complete one case and look through the school for a second one. We'll discuss this in class Oct. 13.
